Heavy Equipment Field Service Technician

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Use a mobile service truck to perform service calls on equipment in the field
  • Inspects, repairs, and adjusts graders, scrapers, trenching machines, pans, backhoes, diesel tractors, hydraulic and cable operated attachments, and earthmoving bulldozers.
  • Overhaul, adjust, and tunes diesel/gasoline engines
  • Grind valves and overhaul transmissions
  • Repairs and replaces pistons, crankshafts, bearings, clutches, and hydraulic drivers
  • Rebuilds and replaces tractor undercarriages; changes tracks, rollers, and frames\
  • Responsible for writing the daily reports and logs and supplied to the Superintendent at the end of every workweek
  • Determines machine or vehicle condition by conducting inspections and diagnostic tests, identifying worn and damaged parts
  • Keeps equipment available for use by completing preventive maintenance schedules, installing component and part upgrades, controlling corrosion, and completing winterization procedures
  • Corrects deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, parts, or systems, such as, power and drive trains, electrical, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brake, steering, hydraulics; completes machine shop operations; making adjustments and alignments including bearing loads, gear tooth contact, valve mechanisms, governors, oil systems, control linkages, clutches, and traction units
  • Verifies proper performance by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems
  • Complies with federal and state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards
  • Maintains vehicle records by annotating services and repair logs
  • Contains costs by using warranty and evaluating service/parts options
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading technical and regulation publications
  • Perform annual DOT inspections on trucks and trailers
  • Troubleshoot problems, discussing with equipment manager options for making economical and practical repairs
  • Services vehicles/equipment to include oil changes, greasing, adding fluids, changing filters, and maintaining preventative maintenance schedules
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical and hydraulic systems, diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, and drive trains
  • Order parts and supplies
  • Adjust functional parts of devices, control instruments, and all types of equipment
  • Operate and maintain field service truck
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience

  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience
  • Must be able to provide own tools
  • Welding and fabrication skills needed
  • Must possess a valid Class A or B CDL
  • Valid driver's license with a clean record
  • Ability to pass pre-employment and random drug screening

Physical Requirements

  • Sit, stand and walk continuously throughout the scheduled workday
  • Stand, reach, drive and use fine motor skills frequently throughout the day
  • Occasionally bend, kneel, squat and climb throughout the workday
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. on occasion
  • Work both indoors and outdoors, exposed to all weather conditions and may be in loud environments
  • Must work in a manner that will not jeopardize the health and safety of him/herself or others

Language Skills

Must be able to read and comprehend English
