Job Summary:
A Payroll Tax Specialist manages employer and employee tax contributions and reconciliations in an organization. The role reports to the Payroll Manager and is critical to ensuring the organization is compliant with tax legislation and in compliance with government regulations.
 
An accounting or payroll background is important for a Payroll Tax Specialist, with in-depth knowledge of payroll procedures, tax legislation, accounting practices, audit requirements, 941 forms, and tax laws pertaining to garnishments. This is a highly specialized role with a high degree of responsibility.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Implements, maintains, and reviews payroll processing and accounting systems to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions.
  • Ensures accurate and timely processing of payroll.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate records and reports of payroll transactions.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices as related to payroll administration.
  • Audits filing of weekly, monthly, and quarterly tax returns and reporting.
  • Facilitates audits by providing records and documentation to auditors.
  • Identifies, recommends, and implements updates to payroll accounting software, systems, and procedures under the guidance of the Payroll Manager.
  • Back-Up to Payroll Administrator
  • Off-cycle updates and reconciliation to payroll
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities: 
  • Extensive knowledge of payroll functions including preparation, balancing, internal control, and payroll taxes.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail with commitment to accuracy and timeliness.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Proficient with payroll software.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field required.
  • At least three to five years of related experience required.
 
Physical Requirements: 
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift fifteen pounds at times.
  • Must be able to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets.
  • Must be able to operate a computer.
  • Must be able to frequently communicate via telephone.
