Yard Worker

 

Summary

The Yard Worker is responsible for all duties related to trailer & truck movement within the yard. Primary duties would include daily asset yard inventory, shuttling / stacking of trailers, daily forklift truck(s) inspections, staging and/or pre-configuring equipment, and general yard clean-up of MEC and debris—some minor technical repairs/duties such as basic lighting, mud flaps, etc.

 

Education and Experience

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent is required, and 1-2 years experience operating vehicles and/or heavy equipment in a transportation environment is preferred.
  2. Must be able to operate all yard-related equipment.
  3. Experience using essential mechanic hand tools to make minor repairs on trailer equipment.
  4. Basic understanding of tractor/trailer air systems.
  5. Must be self-motivated, able to multi-task and work independently.
  6. Must be a team player, amenable to various work projects.
  7. Must have forklift certification or become certified within 90 days of employment.
  8. Must be available to work occasional overtime, Saturdays, and other shift vacancies as needed.
  9. Must demonstrate a proactive commitment to ATS corporate values and the success of all staff.
  10. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required.
  11. Excellent communication skills (written, listening, and verbal).
  12. Willing and able to travel infrequently, including overnight travel.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Drive or forklift trucks and trailers around the yard to maintain order or move trucks to designated inspection/staging areas.
  2. Perform full truck and trailer inventory daily or more frequently as needed.
  3. Ensure forklifts are being maintained and inspected daily.
  4. Stage For Sale assets for inspection when required and communicate effectively with the prep inspection supervisor when faced with unforeseen challenges.
  5. Add/remove deck inserts, saddles, and goosenecks to multi-axle and Schnabel trailers when requested.
  6. Upon operations' request, create steerable multi-axle trailers by swapping out trailer components and connecting airlines, pigtails, etc.
  7. Assist in creating and maintaining the yard layout and relocate trailing equipment to create more space when equipment returns to the yard.
  8. Report and/or make minor repairs when found on the trailers, such as replacing lights, air lines, fittings, pigtails, and other repairs primarily using hand tools.
  9. Properly lockout tag out any asset as needed.
  10. Assist drivers in the yard with the equipment as needed.
  11. Work in varying outdoor conditions, including extreme cold and hot throughout the year.
  12. Understands and consistently performs in accordance with ATS Mission, Vision, and Values.

  14. Complete work responsibilities outside regular business hours as needed, and infrequent travel may be required. 
  15. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

Physical Demands

  1. Constantly operating various forklifts and other material movement equipment including semi tractors.
  2. Intermittently uses hand tools and power hand tools to perform light maintenance or cleaning or enter data into computer.
  3. Intermittently inspects and assess equipment and loads to ensure safe transportation.
  4. Intermittently ascend/descend forklifts, tractors and ladders to perform duties.
  5. Occasionally positioning self under, on top of, or in awkward positions to secure loads or fix things.
  6. Occasionally communicates with others regarding work questions, processes, procedures and timelines.
  7. Must be able to move/position parts, tools, equipment:
  1. From 1 to 10 lbs. frequently
  2. From 11 to 25 lbs. intermittently
  3. From 25 to 50 lbs. occasionally
  4. Over 50 lbs. occasionally
  1. Exposure to:
  1. Loud noises constantly requiring hearing protection.
  2. Temperature extremes intermittently due to outside weather conditions.
  3. Dirt, dust, grease, chemicals and odors constantly.
  4. Situations requiring eye protection and steel toed boots.
