The Position:

The candidate will be expected to develop an active research program in a field of expertise that engages and supports the Athabasca University Geophysical Observatory (AUGO) I and II. Located in the dark skies of Athabasca County, approximately 25km SW of Athabasca University's campus, the main observatory, AUGO II, supports optical and electromagnetic studies of auroras and is complemented by the smaller on-campus facility AUGO I, which includes the Athabasca University Robotic Telescope (AURT). The observatories currently support an active research program, with significant international collaboration that will extend to the incumbent. The opening of M.Sc. in Earth Systems Science incudes a study stream enabling graduate supervision in these fields.

In addition to research, the successful candidate is expected to support AU's undergraduate program in Applied Mathematics through the coordination and teaching of undergraduate courses, including high enrollment introductory level courses and intermediate and senior level courses. As well, the incumbent will be expected to contribute to the continued development of the Applied Math program through the design of new courses as determined by the needs of the program and the candidate's research and teaching interests. The ideal candidate will have expertise in mathematics software and programming languages and will provide integrated and practical training using such technologies within their courses. Evidence of teaching excellence is required, and familiarity with online systems of course delivery and distance education are preferred.

The successful candidate will also be expected to serve as an active member of Athabasca University's community through participation in Centre, Faculty and University Committees. Additionally, faculty members are expected to participate in service to the greater external community.

This is a full-time position located in Alberta. Occasional travel is required to the Athabasca University Geophysical Observatory (AUGO) I and II. Athabasca University is a fully-accredited, comprehensive academic and research post-secondary institution with a commitment to facilitating open access to education.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a PhD Mathematics, Physics, or a related discipline.
