Building Inspector

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, reviews residential plan submittals, inspect new and existing buildings and structures to enforce compliance with adopted building and trade codes, approved specifications and standards, City ordinances and zoning codes. Performs enforcement duties related to unlicensed or unpermitted contractors. Assists with the Code Enforcement related to public nuisance issues.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Conduct son-site inspections during various phases of building construction and enforce compliance with all adopted building and trade codes, City ordinances and zoning codes.
  • Notifies responsible persons of violations of specific codes, ordinances or regulations.
  • Initiates enforcement actions against persons failing to comply.
  • Assists public with permit applications, as well as provides general information on building and trade codes, and related City ordinances.
  • Processes inspection reports; processes building and other permits.
  • Write letters and memos; enters and transmits information and data electronically.
  • Reviews plans, drawings and specifications required to issue sign, building, and demolition permits, and certificates of occupancy.
  • Helps with Code Enforcement of properties by leaving door hangers on affected properties
  • Receives or initiates cases involving violations of the public nuisance, zoning, health and safety, and other codes and ordinances of the City of Sand Springs. Inspects, as necessary, affected properties for resolution of violations using civil or criminal processes.
  • Assists other employees with general departmental functions.
  • Cross trains and assists with Construction Inspections as needed
  • Other duties as assigned, including assisting other departments as required.

Minimum Qualifications & Required Knowledge:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • One (1) year prior experience in a related field
  • Valid Oklahoma Class “D” Driver License
  • Required to obtain and possess the following State of Oklahoma Building Inspector Licenses within the time provided:
    • Within eighteen months of hire must be licensed unlimited in a minimum of two (2) trades or all four (4) trades of one (1) discipline
    • Within three (3) years of hire, all licenses must be obtained

  • Code Enforcement certification through the Oklahoma code Enforcement Association within two years of hire
  • Knowledge of relevant city, state, and federal laws, regulations, and policies
  • Knowledge of building, life safety, fire, commercial, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and residential codes
  • Knowledge of stormwater and erosion control ordinances
  • Skill in the use of computers and various software programs
  • Skill in the completion of building and site inspections
  • Skill in the completion of building plan reviews
  • Skill in oral and written communication
