Silviculture and Fire Protection Technician

Job Summary:

Contribute to the Division's responsibility to provide sustainable timber revenue which will enable tribal government to respond to economic, social, health and educational needs of tribal members.  Incumbent supervises and works along with crew, performing a variety of technical and skilled tasks in reforestation, site preparation, prescribed burning, wildland fires and other silviculture work connection with resource management of the Tribe's forest land.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs a variety of technical and skilled tasks under a forest management plan.
  • Performs field work necessary for prescribed fire management, including maintaining fire equipment, slashing, fire trailing, lighting, holding and mop-up.
  • Performs manual release and pre-commercial thinning of trees to enhance growth, with the use of power saws.
  • Plants trees and performs seedling protection such as tubing, netting and budcapping.
  • Prunes trees using pull saws.
  • Applies herbicides using backpack sprayer.
  • Participates in wildland fire activities, including protecting Reservation, State, public and private lands.
  • Builds recreational and hiking trails, providing regular maintenance as needed.
  • Ensure that crew members follow safety practices.
  • Assist in training of crew to perform required job duties.
  • Performs maintenance on chain saws and tools to assure proper working conditions.
  • Operates a variety of equipment; fork lift, four wheeler, grass trimmer, brush cutters, and tractor.
  • Assists other departments within the Natural Resources Division such as Timber, Fish and Wildlife, and Lands.
  • Assists in set up of annual Pow Wow, Spirit Mountain Stampede, and Veterans Pow Wow.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED and 2 years of related experience.
  • OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Driving Requirements:

  • Must maintain a valid Oregon driver's license or obtain one upon hire, qualify for the Tribe's vehicle insurance, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance. 
  • Ability to obtain a CDL license preferred

Qualifications, and Registrations, and Certifications:

  • Single Resource Boss NWCG certification is required.
  • Must be CPR/First Aid certified or ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Must pass the National Wildfire Coordinating Group national fitness test and may be subject to medical screening.
  • Ability to be trained as a Class A, B, and C cutter and be certified within 3 months after hire.
  • Continually requires the ability to work under strenuous or adverse conditions for extended periods, while maintaining mental alertness and concentration to maintain work rate, quality, and safety.
  • Continually requires the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discrimination in sound.
  • Continually requires verbally expressing or exchanging ideas or important instructions accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Must be flexible to work long and odd hours, evenings, weekends and holidays. 
  • Local travel is frequently required.  Extended travel away from local area is occasionally required.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently requires raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position.
  • Frequently requires bending legs and crouching for sustained periods of time.
  • Frequently requires standing and walking for sustained periods of time.
  • Frequently requires repetitive movement of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Frequently requires moving about in confined spaces occasionally requires moving about on hands and knees.
  • Occasionally requires lifting of up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • The worker is frequently subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions such as extreme weather conditions for periods of morae than one hour, which may include, but not limited to; rain, snow sleet, hail, wind, sun, fire, extremely high or low humidity, or a combination of these conditions.
  • Frequently subject to noise, sufficient to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. 
  • Frequently subject to fumes, odors, dust, mists, and chemicals. 
  • Often subjected to exposure to animals, such as snakes and insects and other forest animals. 
  • Frequently close to, or operating, large machinery such as bulldozers, excavators, yarders, and loaders. 
  • May be required to work in semi-remote locations and around logging equipment. 
  • Supports a safe work environment by performing all duties in accordance with Tribal safety policies and procedures, and Emergency Management Plan. 
  • May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during emergencies.
  • Due to the nature of interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
