Digital Resources and Metadata Librarian

Athabasca University's Library and Scholarly Resources is currently recruiting for the position of Digital Resources and Metadata Librarian.

Athabasca University's Library and Scholarly Resources is comprised of the Athabasca University Library and the Thomas A. Edge Archives & Special Collections. We are dedicated to creativity, excellence, service, and effectiveness, and to accessibility, EDI, and kwayskasatsowin (conciliation) with indigenous members of our community.  

Our priorities over the next several years include providing access to academic resources, including open access and OER, supporting digital literacy through collaboration with faculty, assessment of instructional resources, and advancing support for research, through the implementation of the university's research data management strategy, including the further development of services, and ensuring continued access to and preservation of AU's unique and multimodal research outputs.  

Join our team as a Digital Resources and Metadata Librarian! Reporting to the Associate University Librarian, Library Academic Services Support, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing the discoverability and accessibility of our digital collections. Collaborate with colleagues, lead metadata projects, and drive continuous improvement in digital resource management. If you are passionate about metadata, digital preservation, and innovative library solutions, this position is perfect for you!

The successful candidate will bring expertise in metadata standards, digital resource management, and a passion for enhancing access to digital collections. With strong project management skills and a collaborative approach, they will lead initiatives that drive innovation and improve discoverability. Their experience with digital preservation, metadata systems, and a commitment to continuous improvement will ensure the library's resources are effectively managed and accessible, supporting the academic mission of the institution.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Experience in metadata creation and management, including familiarity with metadata standards such as MARC, Dublin Core, MODS, etc.
  • Knowledge of digital resource management systems and tools, such as integrated library systems (ILS), digital asset management systems (DAMS), and institutional repositories.
  • Experience with digital preservation practices and principles.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to lead and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a proven ability to work effectively with colleagues across different departments.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with trends and developments in digital librarianship and metadata standards.
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python) or data manipulation tools is an asset.
  • Familiarity with linked data principles and practices is an asset.

Work Location

As a resident of the community of Athabasca, or nearby in Alberta, you can elect to work virtually from your home or in our offices on our beautiful campus. This position can be done virtually however there are certain job responsibilities that must be completed in the Athabasca location.
