Water Treatment Plant Operator I

Job Summary:

Responsible for the safe operation of the Water Treatment Plant, providing biologically and chemically safe water for human consumption. 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Operates equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption, industrial use, and fire protection.
  • Collects representative water samples from the plant and performs chemical, physical, and bacteriological tests to assure water quality; submits samples for testing as required.
  • Determines and adds specified amounts of chemicals, such as chlorine, to disinfect, deodorize, and clarify water.
  • Calibrates equipment and adjusts chemical feeders for optimal treated water output.
  • Monitors computers, charts, dials, pumps, chemical feeders, laboratory equipment, meters, and gauges to determine status of various plant functions.
  • Reads and records chemical usage; fills chemical feeders; mixes chemicals; changes reagents.
  • Maintains filing system of operations and maintenance reports.
  • Checks motors and pumps for excessive noise and temperatures.
  • Ensures plant is safe and secure.
  • Performs plant maintenance, grounds keeping, and housekeeping duties.
  • Adjusts output to meet demands.
  • Removes sludge from settling basin.
  • Available to be reached during off hours in the event of an emergency.
  • Available for shift work as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned, including assisting other departments as required.

Minimum Qualifications & Required Knowledge:

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations
  • Possession of a valid Class D Driver's License issued by the State of Oklahoma
  • Class “D” ODEQ Waterworks Operator certification, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Knowledge of relevant city, state, and federal laws, regulations, and policies
  • Knowledge of state and federal environmental and water treatment plant regulations
  • Knowledge of biological, chemical, and mechanical principles of a water treatment plant
  • Knowledge of proper safety procedures related to plant operations and grounds maintenance
  • Skill in the laboratory analysis of water samples
  • Skill in the operation, maintenance, and repair of a water treatment plant
  • Skill in oral and written communication

Ability to be reached during off hours in the event of an emergency
