Health Promotion Specialist

Job Summary:

Promotes and provides services that promote a proactive process to address health and wellness for individuals, families, and communities by enhancing protective factors that increase knowledge, skills, and attitudes for making healthy choices.

Essential Functions:

  • Develops, plans, implements, and evaluates comprehensive health education and promotion programs for Health & Wellness.
  • Works directly with children and youth in carrying out health promotion deliverables and activities to support healthy lifestyles.
  • Conducts outreach activities to promote health education programs and services.
  • Plans, organizes and coordinates Health & Wellness and other community events.
  • Coordinates with other relevant departments and enhances collaborative partnerships with internal and external partners. 
  • Supports and contributes to community and health assessments and ensures activities are aligned with department plans and priorities.
  • Participates in mobile clinic events.
  • Provides transport to children, youth, and other community members.
  • Writes reports and proposals to document program activities and outcomes.
  • Adheres to HIPAA law as it impacts a client's private health information.
  • Maintains accurate and current client records and program reporting as required, including documentation in electronic health records and shared department folders.
  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of two (2) years of post-high school/GED specialized trade or job skills training in health and wellness such as coursework in Certified Nurse's Assistant training or Community Health Representative
  • OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Driving Requirements:

  • Must maintain a valid Oregon driver's license or obtain one upon hire, qualify for the Tribe's vehicle insurance, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance.

Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:

  • Requires frequent weekend availability.
  • Requires First Aid and CPR certification or able to complete 90 days upon hire.
  • Requires demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft products, Nextgen electronic health record, copy and fax machine, and telephone system
  • Must have working knowledge of HIPAA law.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture is required.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.
  • Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers.  Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
  • Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.
  • Occasionally requires lifting of up to 40 pounds.
  • This position is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions.
  • Supports a safe work environment by performing all duties in accordance with Tribal safety policies and procedures, and Emergency Management Plan. 
  • Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
  • May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during emergencies.
  • Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
