Safety Manager

Summary 

The Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing the safety programs at ATS. They will create, present, monitor, and ensure compliance, while analyzing data to ensure the effectiveness of the programs. The Safety Manager will work proactively with internal departments to ensure employees and drivers are informed on procedures and expectations. They will be responsible for managing and coordinating the daily workflow of employees, setting goals and guiding their performance.  

Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university in safety/compliance or related field; or 3+ years equivalent combination of education and experience in the transportation industry resulting in a firm understanding of the Department of Transportation (DOT) safety regulations. 

  • 2+ years of leadership experience required. 

  • Experience in team building and collaboration with business leaders, 3rd parties, and internal staff. 

  • Outstanding coordination, facilitation, consultation, and conflict resolution skills. 

  • Able to foster a culture of transparency and a sense of purpose among the team and create clear accountabilities and metrics using positive and collaborative methods.  

  • Strong employee performance management, training and coaching, recognition, and reward skills. 

  • Strong interpersonal skills; able to establish trust and rapport with all levels of staffAble to relate effectively to diverse cultures. 

  • Proven experience in creating, presenting, and facilitating training.  

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to manage and prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality. 

  • Must demonstrate a proactive commitment to ATS corporate values and the success of all staff. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required. 

  • Excellent communication skills (written, listening and verbal). 

  • Willing and able to travel infrequently, including overnight travel. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Prepare and facilitate safety meetings and provide high level leadership of active safety programs.  

  • Make modifications to safety programs, set specific goals analyze for department accountability and results.  

  • Partner with internal managers to ensure staff are informed and on safety practices and procedures, accident prevention, and current FMCSA regulations and policies.  

  • Coordinate fleet wide messages when critical safety events occur.  

  • Provide high level leadership of active safety programs and monitor for driver compliance.  

  • Review all safety incidents and accidents, determine preventability, conduct post-accident reviews, and implement corrective actions as needed per guidelines.  

  • Partner with Claims department on safety, equipment and liability status. 

  • Review and investigate claim documentation related to any accident or incident.    

  • Present overview of department specific safety performance history to division executives.  

  • Work proactively with Operations regarding safety and compliance issues. 

  • Communicate LYTX trend analysis to Operations team to reduce frequency and severity of events.  

  • Build the right team by leveraging networks to recruit, hire and effectively onboard new team members. 

  • Manage the team for optimal performance by communicating and clarifying expectations, monitoring and effectively communicating performance, coaching and mentoring for improvement and development, and rewarding employees for high performance. 

  • Assign projects and daily work to Specialty Freight staff utilizing available resources and skills to best meet company and customer expectations.  

  • Participate in rotating schedule to facilitate road evaluations for new drivers in orientation.  

  • Provide back-up for Driver Managers and Safety Department team members as needed.

  • Complete work responsibilities outside of normal business hours as needed and infrequent travel may be required.   

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
