Qualifications:

Minimum of 8 year(s) of experience in Botany OR MA/MS Degree in Science, Biology, Botany, or related field

  • Required: valid driver?s license; willingness to work/hike in uneven terrain and carry day pack up to 10 lb; and, capacity to follow field/office protocols (and teach to others); demonstrated experience with identification of uncommon and rare plants in SEKI to subspecies or variety; demonstrated experience to teach others on how to identify uncommon and rare plants in SEKI; willingness to drive personal vehicle to study areas.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access
Duties:

Provide botanical expertise to park staff as needed. Responsibilities primarily include one or more of the following: updating the parks? Vascular Plant Checklist, updating the parks? herbarium records, conducting and/or coordinating specimen determinations, and conducting botanical surveys.

  • Botanical Knowledge: Apply knowledge of Sierra Nevada flora to provide authoritative review of taxonomic and/or nomeclatural changes as they apply to the parks? Vascular Plant Checklist.   40%
  • Data Management: Review most recent update of the parks? Vascular Plant Checklist to ensure accuracy of changes and protect against data loss.   40%
  • Botanical Knowledge: Use in intermediate to advanced botany id techniques (dichotomous keys and other botanical id resources) to identify plants or coordinate identification by an outside expert as needed.   15%
  • Leadership & Safety: Use leadership skills and experience to identify uncommon plants within the survey areas when conducting botanical surveys. Maintain good communication with crew, Park Dispatch, and Plant Ecologist. Use appropriate tools (e.g., GPS, maps) to navigate safely either alone or with crew members. Follow NPS safety and communication protocols when working in the field. Communicate with NPS partner about safety concerns or incidents.   5%

  • Travel Requirements: Enrollee may need to drive POV for plant surveys in the parks
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Park Radio training, MD-44 Communication Plan, Plant Ecology Communication Plan, RMS Driving Safely, RMS Environmental Hazards, Plant Ecology Pre-season safety training topics
  • Required Safety Gear: Field safety equipment may be necessary to inspect burned areas or near roads
  • Physical requirements: Ability to walk along trails with uneven terrain and occasional off trail. Ability to sit at a desk for extended periods of time while identifying plants.
  • Remote work arrangements are available for this position.
