Business Unit Manager - Machine Parts

General Description:

The Business Unit Manager for Machined Parts will oversee the daily operation for AFSI’s in-housing machining operation as well as the procurement, supplier quality and supplier development responsibilities for purchased machined parts. Oversee team of 15-20 direct reports. Business Unit Managers objectives is to ensure parts are available on time to support customer requirements and with the required quality and cost.

Essential Functions:

  • Establish goals for production and execute a plan to meet those goals.
  • Execute make vs. buy analysis, ensure production and procurement plan supports customer required timing and cost.
  • Develop investment plan to drive quality, cost and lead time improvements in support of the business 3-year strategy.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement through the application of lean manufacturing, Six-Sigma, 5s and other appropriate tools and techniques,
  • Work with existing suppliers to improve quality, cost and lead time. Identify and develop new suppliers as required.
  • Support sales department, engineering and operations through production of samples and prototypes.
  • Supports AFSI’s financial objectives (cost reduction, absorption / productivity, investment, inventory stocking levels)
  • Provide order status updates and resolve problems.
  • Assure compliance with all quality management system requirements (ISO / AS9100 and others)
  • Perform root cause analysis and resolve problems in support of continuous improvement.
  • Assure products meet all necessary quality requirements.
  • Develop a strong and effective Operations team. Provide positive and objective coaching/ mentorship of team members.

Required Knowledge Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Clear sense of urgency and passion for customer satisfaction.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Knowledge of measuring devices and their operation, micrometers, calipers, gages
  • Knowledge of programming of CNC multi-axis lathes
  • Minimal travel required

Required Education and Experience:  

  • 5 to 10 years of hands-on machining experience with demonstrated proficiency on the most challenging machines, including CNCs
  • 3 to 5 years of supervision experience in a precision machining operation.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident to Satisfy AFSI ITAR requirements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing engineering, Operations, Industrial Engineering, Management Science, business or Finance preferred.

Work Environment:

The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate and reflective of a CNC machine shop environment.

Physical Demands:

The employee is occasionally required to lift and/ or move up to 25 pounds. The Employee is required to stand or walk for extended periods of time on his/her feet on occasion. The employee is required to bend, stoop, stretch, reach, push, pull and climb on occasion. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color and peripheral vision with depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
