POSITION SUMMARY:

The Learning Support Teacher provides essential support to students with special needs, ensuring they have access to meaningful and inclusive educational experiences. The Learning Support Teacher will actively collaborate with Occupational Therapists and Speech-Language Pathologists to integrate therapeutic strategies into their regular lessons. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about working with students with diverse learning abilities and are committed to pursuing the necessary qualifications to become a fully certified special education teacher. This position is grant-funded until 2028. There is no guarantee of employment past this date.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Deliver developmentally appropriate lessons focusing on cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development.
  • Use evidence-based teaching methods and strategies to support learning and growth.
  • Create a structured, nurturing, and inclusive classroom environment that fosters independence and social interaction.
  •  Implement positive behavior support strategies to address challenging behaviors.
  • Maintain a safe and organized learning environment.
  • Work closely with families to communicate student progress and provide strategies for continued support at home.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including speech therapists, occupational therapists, and other specialists.
  • Attend and contribute to team meetings, parent-teacher conferences, and professional development sessions.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments to monitor student progress and adjust teaching strategies as needed.
  • Document and maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, and IEP goals.
  • Prepare progress reports and participate in IEP and IFSP meetings with specified team.
  • Commit to obtaining necessary certifications and qualifications in special education within a specified timeframe.
  • Participate in professional development workshops and training sessions related to special education.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, CERTIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong knowledge of child development and special education laws (e.g., IDEA).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in using adaptive technology and assistive tools.
  • Patience, creativity, and a passion for working with young learners.
  • Physical ability to lift, carry, or assist students as needed.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing needs and schedules.
  • Collaborative and supportive school culture dedicated to student success.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience: An Associate Degree working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education.
  • Experience: At least two years prior experience teaching young children with special needs.
  • Must have a valid California Class C Driver’s License. 
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Must acknowledge and agree to maintain a Drug-Free workplace (including marijuana) as a condition of employment with the Pala Band of Mission Indians. Must pass pre-employment and random drug testing during employment.
