NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). These experienced professionals provide administrative, technical, and professional support to the U.S. Geological Survey U.S. Geological Survey through the Experienced Services Program (ESP).

Qualifications:

BA/BS Degree in Biology with minimum additional experience of 5 year(s) in Stream Ecology OR Previously completed training in Long Term Biological Monitoring

Duties:

The Alaska and Washington Transboundary Projects, both managed by the Washington Water Science Center, is in need of an experienced Biologist to continue with the annual biological and sediment sampling, sample processing, and data review that the Project has underway. Now in its fourth year of sampling, support for consistent field collections and laboratory methods, collection locations and techniques and location familiarity and data review is needed. The position would need to report to the WA WSC in Tacoma, WA occasionally and as well as be able to travel to remote locations in Northern Washington and SE Alaska. The work is expected to be intermittent between August 1st, 2025 and January 31st, 2026, and require work in both laboratory settings as well as in field conditions in NE Washington and SE Alaska.   • Planning a field visit. Planning personnel, travel logistics, housing, task, equipment, timelines   25%
  • Conducting a Field Visit to conduct field sampling   15%
  • Managing Sample Inventory and Sample preservation, sub-sampling, logging-in samples for subsequent analysis, lab contracting, and shipping samples to necessary laboratories   20%
  • Reviewing, approving, documenting changes and corrections, of data and sampling efforts, to both new and past samples, in development of Data Release for peer review and public dissemination.   40%

Other:
  • Travel Requirements: The position is required to visit remote field sites in NE Washington State and SE Alaska. Brief, overnight stays in remote, and/or rustic lodging may be required with limited cell phone or internet connectivity.
  • Overnight travel: Overnight travel will average 0-1 night per week, but should not exceed 4 nights in a given month.
  • Air travel anticipated: roughly once a month, or less on average
  • Government Vehicle Training: online defensive driver training is offered
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Slips, trips, and falls are always a concern when conducting field work. The Enrollee will be scheduled for a consultation with the WAWSC Safety Officer for discussion about concerns and risk on the job, in both laboratory and field settings.
  • Physical requirements: Must be able to lift and carry 40 lbs over uneven ground. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
