Reports to: Service Manager/Service Writer
Summary: In this role, Technicians are subject matter experts in the areas of service efficiency, technician training and service operational excellence. This role still retains the work scope of a technician for repairing, diagnosing and working on/around equipment, however the Lead Technician is expected to have the increased teaching and oversight as associated with mentoring other technicians.
Service:
This technician will be given job assignments that will consist of successfully, efficiently, and accurately performing regular repairs on machinery, troubleshooting, diagnosing, and testing equipment, assisting employees in planning jobs, scheduling workflow in the shop, providing technical advice, assigning jobs to employees, communicating with internal and external customers, and being responsible for a clean and safe shop environment.
General Duties:
- Work in a safe manner following all rules and regulations.
- Efficiently perform machinery maintenance and repairs in the shop and/or field.
- Efficiently troubleshoot problems using technical data bases and resources.
- Communicate with manufacturers using the phone and computer programs.
- Fully and accurately document work descriptions and all necessary information by way of writing on paper and/or typing it into a computer.
- Navigate a windows based electronic service manual, wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics and parts catalogue.
- Notice customer urgency and react accordingly to their needs.
- Build a cost estimate to complete the job if needed.
- Fully follow the dealership and manufacturer service guidelines.
- Fill out your own parts requisitions for necessary parts.
- Clean up your area using brooms, detergents and water hoses.
Training:
- Assist the technicians to complete correct repairs, diagnostics, proper paperwork, training, safety, general best practices, as well as staying focused on the task at hand throughout the day.
- The incumbent will still be expected to perform as a working technician in the shop and will still be required to maintain a reasonable level of efficiency.
- Will assist in the training of new and current techs with correct warranty paperwork procedure, tablet use, and 3C's, looking up proper parts needed for jobs.
Management:
- Be aware of equipment priority
- Attend morning meetings and routine technician meetings
- Provide guidance as needed to the yard personnel
- Assist with quote development by helping technicians provide labor time estimates or talking with your supervisor to verify a quote is accurate
- Encouraging Technicians to participate in all manufacturer training to further advance their career as technicians
- Not expected to discipline technicians but may be called on for advice on technician standards and when those standards are not being met
- Enforce safety policies and procedures with other technicians
Time requirements and expectations:
- A technician in this role should spend 85% of their time working on equipment and performing usual technician duties. The other 15% of time should be spent teaching and coaching other technicians and providing assistance.
- When possible the technician in this role should see that his/her time is added to work orders when aiding in diagnostic or quality inspections. Time should not be added for training or technician rework activities.
- An example may be 30 minutes spent training per day and the remainder of the time spent working on machines yourself or adding time to machines being worked on through diagnostic or quality work.
Heavy Equipment Technician Qualifications and Experience:
- GED/HS DIPLOMA PLUS Minimum 2 year Diesel Technology, Ag Technology, Automotive Technology or Heavy Equipment Technology degree or equivalent experience
- 2-5 years of experience working on hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems or heavy equipment maintenance experience preferred
- Welding and cutting torch experience preferred
- Basic tool set and storage
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions and information
- Must be personable, highly motivated, a problem solver, reliable, ethical and able to adapt to all situations from customers, suppliers, coworkers and manufacturers
- Requires a valid driver's license, possess or have ability to obtain a CDL rating and the ability to maintain an insurable driving record
- Must pass a criminal background check and drug screen that includes medical marijuana
- Be authorized to work in the USA without sponsorship now or in the future
- Requires prolonged standing with periodic lifting, walking, standing, bending, stooping and stretching
- Requires ability to push, lift, pull and/or carry 75 lbs. or more
