Wastewater Laborer

This position meets the safety-sensitive criteria listed in 40 O.S. 544, or it is DOT regulated and thereby subject to random drug screenings as warranted.  This job classification has been designated as a safety sensitive job classification in accordance with the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana and Patient Protection Act, 63 O.S., § 427.1 et seq., (OSCN 2019), effective August 29, 2019. Employees in this job classification can be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination if they test positive for marijuana components or metabolites, even if they possess a medical marijuana license.

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, installs, maintains, repairs, and services wastewater distribution facilities.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assist with installation and repair of wastewater lines and mains
  • Assist with joining and fitting of pipelines and valves
  • Assist with rodding sewer lines
  • Assist with routine checks and maintenance of lift stations
  • Assist with street related repairs
  • Assist with line locates as needed
  • Assist with inventory control
  • Assist in the preparation of reports concerning work progress and other reports as assigned by the foreman or superintendent
  • Maintain safe work environment through continual observance of procedures and safety awareness
  • Maintain cleanliness of interior and exterior of facility by way of: mowing, weed eating, sweeping, mopping, and general upkeep
  • Collect samples as needed
  • Notify customers when assigned work affects service
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including assisting other departments as required.

Minimum Qualifications & Required Knowledge:

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Possession of or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire:
    • Class "D" ODEQ Wastewater Operator certification
  • Possession of or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire
    • Class "B" or higher Commercial Driver License

(Acquisition of CDL is an automatic upgrade to Maintenance Technician Level I)

  • Knowledge of relevant city, state, and federal laws, regulations, and policies
  • Knowledge of proper safety procedures related to grounds maintenance
  • Knowledge of proper constructions methods and techniques, including the proper use and placement of traffic control devices
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Ability to work with hand tools and small equipment
  • Ability to work with motorized vehicles and equipment
  • Ability to be reached during off hours in the event of an emergency
  • Ability to read construction drawings, land plats, maps and other diagrams

 

Additional Information:

Supervisory Controls: The Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions.  The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature of the final results.

Guidelines: Guidelines include City policies, procedures, and supervisory instructions.  These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

Complexity: The work consists of related construction and maintenance duties.  Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.

Scope and Effect: The purpose of this position is to assist with the installation, repair, and maintenance of the City's water system.

Contacts:  Contacts are typically with city personnel, property owners, and members of the general public.

Purpose of Contacts: Contacts are typically to resolve problems, and to provide services.

The work is primarily performed while standing and moving about at work sites.  Requires the physical dexterity required to operate heavy equipment, enter confined areas, and perform manual labor such as digging, fitting pipe and valves.  Must be able to regularly life and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently life and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally move up to 100 pounds.

The work is typically performed in water treatment facilities and outdoors.  The employee may be exposed to machinery with moving parts and occasional could or inclement weather.  The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
