The NPS Experienced Services Program is a unique partnership created to help solve the workforce issues facing government agencies. The program connects experienced workers (age 55+) to the NPS to provide scientific, technical, and administrative support. NPS ESP positions are meant to provide temporary, project-based support. This position is currently funded for an estimate of 5 weeks. A background security investigation may be required prior to the start date.? Only those positions with 30+ hours per week are eligible for health insurance benefits; all positions will accrue sick leave.? The experienced workers participating in the Program are referred to as ?Enrollees? and are not employees of the NPS or NEW Solutions. NEW Solutions is the ESP non-governmental organization responsible for administrative aspects of the program, and the Enrollees work under NPS direction to assist the Agency staff in carrying out their mission.? NPS ESP Enrollees benefit from the opportunity to keep technical skills current; to access new training opportunities; to engage in gainful project-based positions; and to undertake meaningful tasks using their experience and talent to contribute to the environment, the national economy, and their own financial security.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 10 year(s) of experience in working with computer hardware, peripherals, GPS units, and GIS operating systems. Professional knowledge of geography and digital cartography in order to successfully integrate and apply the full range of GIS applications to meet program objectives. Duties:

The enrollee serves as a specialist for parks in the region, specifically Chickasaw National Recreation Area, supporting ongoing efforts related to recovery from impacts from tornadoes that damaged and/or destroyed cultural resources, particularly built landscape features and vegetation. Assist on an as-needed basis with field documentation and develop mapping products to support cultural resources management needs at CHIC. GIS is used to document, analyze, and integrate the management of natural and cultural resources in their environmental context or to manage the environment in the context of the resources.

  • Manages the GIS database and database management system, including the conversion of thematic source maps from analog to digital form through the use of appropriate hardware and software. This involves augmenting the GIS database by digitizing mapped information, importing existing digital data, and converting data. Ensures that national data standards and park needs are met.   30%
  • Uses GIS to conduct analysis of geo-referenced data to determine resource conditions and trends, model expected or predicted results of alternative management actions, and work to resolve management issues.   10%
  • Creates maps to support existing park projects such as prescribed burns, treatment areas for non-native plants, and cultural landscape treatments, and land acquisition.   20%
  • Conducts limited field work to generate new mapped information, using standard resources, field sampling, and scientific methods. Coordinates with specialists in other disciplines, as needed, to provide information for digital media, with themes covering cultural and natural resources, infrastructure, and other disciplines.   20%
  • Implements data documentation procedures and distribution using appropriate technologies, e.g. Internet. Designs and develops global positioning system (GPS) data dictionaries, spatial data inventories, and cross linkages to ensure software and data structure compatibility.   20%
