For over 25 years, National Experienced Workforce Solutions (NEW Solutions) has specialized in connecting experienced workers (ages 55+) with full-time and part-time job opportunities that support the critical missions of Federal Agencies across the United States. NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS). These experienced professionals provide administrative, scientific, and technical support to the Agricultural Research Service through the Experienced Worker Program (EWP). *This position will be open until filled.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 1 year(s) of experience in General Agriculture OR AA Degree in No specific area of study required.

Duties:

The enrollee will assist permanent USDA-ARS personnel in the execution of field, greenhouse and laboratory experiments designed to evaluate crop production practices and cropping systems. Both indoor and outdoor tasks will be required. The enrollee shall not sign federal documents, authorize the use of federal funds, nor initiate or conduct federally funded research projects. The enrollee shall not author articles for publication as a federal employee, nor coordinate scientific research between the Government and private industry. The enrollee shall not present themselves as a Government employee or Government representative at meetings both foreign and domestic or when coordinating federal agencies' areas of research. The enrollee shall not make decisions on federally based research on behalf of Government policy makers, and the enrollee shall not supervise any Government employees. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT: Lift up to 40 lbs.

  • Prepare plant and soil samples for laboratory analysis. This may include cleaning, grinding and weighing samples.    30%
  • Assist with analyzing plant and soil samples in a laboratory using equipment such as grain protein, oil and moisture analyzers.   25%
  • Tabulate research data using personal computers and software packages.    20%
  • Assist in the collection of plant and soil samples from field or greenhouse studies focused on production of crops.   15%
  • Maintaining field research sites by weeding, mowing grass, etc.   10%

Other:
  • Training will be provided as necessary by the agency.
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Initial and refresher training with be provided by the Location Safety Officer on: -recognizing symptoms of heat-related illnesses and how to treat them -operating plant and soil grinders, drying ovens and seed cleaning equipment, etc. -recognizing hazards associated laboratory chemicals and proper handling, if appropriate -understanding and minimizing risk of exposure to pesticide residues in the field as per the EPA Worker Protection Standard
