The NPS Experienced Services Program is a unique partnership created to help solve the workforce issues facing government agencies. The program connects experienced workers (age 55+) to the NPS to provide scientific, technical, and administrative support. NPS ESP positions are meant to provide temporary, project-based support. This position is currently funded for an estimate of 20 weeks. A background security investigation may be required prior to the start date.? Only those positions with 30+ hours per week are eligible for health insurance benefits; all positions will accrue sick leave.? The experienced workers participating in the Program are referred to as ?Enrollees? and are not employees of the NPS or NEW Solutions. NEW Solutions is the ESP non-governmental organization responsible for administrative aspects of the program, and the Enrollees work under NPS direction to assist the Agency staff in carrying out their mission.? NPS ESP Enrollees benefit from the opportunity to keep technical skills current; to access new training opportunities; to engage in gainful project-based positions; and to undertake meaningful tasks using their experience and talent to contribute to the environment, the national economy, and their own financial security.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 20 year(s) of experience in community planning and/or landscape architecture, recreation planning, project management, and public engagement. OR BA/BS Degree in Urban, regional, community planning and or landscape architecture focused on conservation and outdoor recreation. OR Previously completed training in GIS and resource analysis skills a plus

  • Knowledge and experience in community planning and design with recognized skills in facilitation, partnership development, community outreach and engagement, and project planning and management. Knowledge of the fields of outdoor recreation and conservation planning essential. Demonstrated skill as a writer geared to a general audience. Graphic design background desired but not required.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, Power Point
  • general software for video conferencing; Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, In Design, GIS, preferred but not required.)
Duties:

To provide technical planning and design assistance for the Pacific West Region targeting communities in Alaska.

  • The enrollee is an NPS RTCA project team member providing outdoor recreation and conservation planning and/or landscape design expertise coordination on community led projects working with government agencies, non-profit organizations, tribes and community groups. This work involves collaboration with project partners directly in communities alongside NPS RTCA staff members who will serve as lead NPS project managers.   50%
  • The enrollee will assist in organizing and conducting planning/design workshops and events and facilitate meetings both in-person and virtually for audiences with a wide range of subject knowledge and experience. This will include developing and implementing methods for substantively involving the interested public in the planning process, with diverse engagement of community interests.   25%
  • This position will be responsible for preparing written and graphic materials and designs to communicate with public and professional audiences and may include writing, mapping, and graphics. The enrollee will communicate frequently with representatives of public agencies and private organizations in the community and at local, state and national forums.   25%

Other:
  • Travel Requirements: Site visits to projects in Alaska and Hawai?i, and possibly other states.
  • Overnight travel: May require overnight travel 1-2 times per month depending on residence of enrollee
  • Air travel anticipated: 1-2 per month
  • Rental cars: Enrollee may choose to use rental car or personal vehicle 1-5 days per month
  • Physical requirements: Enrollee should be able to walk short distances of up to a mile along unimproved surfaces.
  • Remote work arrangements are available for this position.
