POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Post Office Manager, provide administrative support for daily Postal Operations. The Postal Clerk works along with the Pala Administration, Pala Departments, Casino and reservation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Postal Clerk sorts mail, including letters, bills, advertisements, and packages. These tasks are completed in an efficient and timely manner with the utmost confidentiality and adhere to Federal Law when dealing with mail. The Postal Clerk provides customer service and handles supplies for the postal office.
  • The Postal Clerk sells stamps, and mails envelopes and boxes in post office.  They also weigh packages to determine postage and check that packages are in satisfactory condition for mailing. The Postal Clerk registers, certifies, and insures mail and answers questions about postage rates, post office boxes, mailing restrictions, and other postal matters.
  • Postal Clerk loads and unloads postal trucks and moves mail around the post office. The Postal Clerk starts work at the post office early in the morning. Besides delivering and collecting mail, the Postal Clerk collects money for postage-due and COD (cash-on-delivery) fees and obtains signed receipts for registered, certified, and insured mail. Must be able to answer customers' questions about postal regulations and services and provide change-of-address cards and other postal forms when requested.
  • They may have to deal with upset customers, stand for long periods, and be held accountable for an assigned stock of stamps and funds. The Postal Clerk may have to move heavy sacks of mail. Daily job duties include these repetitive movements, as well as constant lifting and bending.  The Postal Clerk must be physically fit to conduct daily duties. There are no specific education requirements; however, the applicant must have a good command of the English language. Upon being hired, the new Postal Clerk will be trained on the job by the Post Office Manager.
  • Perform other Postal duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, CERTIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES:

  • Be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with Tribal officials, employees and the general public.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally, writing to all levels of management, and the general public.
  • Must be able to perform duties independently, establishing office efficiency and set priorities in order to meet deadlines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School graduate or equivalent education (GED).
  • Must have a valid Class C driver's license (in good standing). A DMV printout will be required.
  • Must successfully pass a background check. 
  • Must acknowledge and agree to maintain a Drug-Free workplace (including marijuana) as a condition of employment with the Pala Band of Mission Indians.  Must pass pre-employment and random drug testing during employment.  
  • Indian preference will apply. The Pala Band of Mission Indians will give hiring preference to fully qualified applicants that are Pala Tribal Members. Pala Band of Mission Indians is an equal opportunity employer.
