Manufacturing Automation Engineer

Summary 

As part of our team, The Manufacturing Automation Engineer will design, build and deploy automated systems for use in a production and manufacturing environment. You will collaborate with departmental and corporate leadership to determine existing automation capabilities and future opportunities, creating detailed project road maps for automation projects that support our business objectives. Our ideal candidate has at least a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with experience with electrical, electro-mechanical and control systems hardware.   

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Participate in, and potentially lead a growing team of engineers to accomplish multiple automation projects of various sizes and priority levels  

  • Work with site leaders and stakeholders to identify automation opportunities, develop ROI, and execute projects 

  • Plan, lead, and coordinate automation projects to improve manufacturing process productivity, quality and safety 

  • Create detailed road maps to guide automation projects from conception to final implementation 

  • Research, design and implement automation technology as it pertains to our processes 

  • Communication with suppliers and internal customers about project details. 

  • Support existing automation technology with component and process upgrades 

  • Write detailed automation and equipment specifications to drive the vendor RFP, selection, and validation process 

  • Work with a team to enhance and update existing equipment. 

  • Visit vendors and attend tradeshows to stay current on automation technology 

  • Ensure automation technology and best practices are leveraged across multiple sites 

  • Support design and manufacturing engineering teams in improving product designs and processes for automation 

Qualifications/Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics engineering or equivalent experience 

  • 3 - 5 years of experience in process automation or related role, including project management 

  • Experience in manufacturing and machine design 

  • Experience with automation components/controls, PLC’s / HMI’s, robotics, sensors and vision inspection 

  • Experience leading high value capital projects to drive process improvement and meet operational goals 

  • Experience with the design and implementation of automated manufacturing process equipment 

  • Experience with controllers, sensors and actuators 

  • Excellent problem-solving skills  

  • Eager ownership attitude to “get it done” and willingness to be hands-on 

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office; working knowledge of 3D CAD (SolidWorks) 

  • Experience working with and managing external automation vendors, OEM’s, contractors, etc.

  • Times Microwave Systems, Wallingford, CT 

  • Travel up to 25%
