Safety Supervisor

SUMMARY:

The Safety Supervisor collaborates with manufacturing and engineering, and facility leadership to produce, promote and advise on a wide range of safety disciplines.  The Safety Supervisor will use human and organizational principles to drive ownership of safety and health impacts, with a focus on engagement, learning from events, and systems-level problem solving.  The Safety Supervisor will develop, implement, and continuously improve programs within the safety management framework to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations, and conformance to internal, industry and consensus standards, as appropriate.  This position reports to the General Manager.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees safety or occupational health program elements including fall protection, electrical safety, confined space and hazardous materials.  Analyzes jobs, processes, products, or other systems to determine the risks to employees.
  • Conducts workplace safety inspections and develops abatement plans to control the identified hazards.
  • Serves as subject matter expert in identifying and evaluating personal protective equipment needs (fall-protection, electrical, and hazardous materials).
  • Identifies and evaluates safety training needs.
  • Responsible for compliance with federal, state and local Occupational Safety and Health regulations.
  • Develops new occupational safety and health programs, policies, procedures, technical reports, briefing papers, and approaches to address broad, new compliance and certification problems, taking into consideration OSHA policies, Federal laws, regulations, and industry standards.
  • May act as a point of contact to provide advice and guidance on the applications of policies and procedures; such as, communication with OSHA positions on policies and procedures internally and externally.
  • Actively work as a key point of contact to ensure that production and other facility changes for process improvement are still in line with controls of risks to health and safety.
  • Support Management of Change by analyzing change requests, advising on safety impacts, and assigning/tracking actions to closure.
  • Evaluate specific risks on Powered Industrial Vehicles/Trucks (PIV/PIT) interactions with pedestrians and develop recommendations (safeguards) to eliminate and/or reduce hazards in production, dock, and warehousing environments.  Reviews new equipment, materials, and processes to assure employee safety.
  • Perform external warehouse visits to conduct safety and health inspections/audits, ensure programs are implemented to maintain compliance with local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Partner with department managers regarding Industrial Hygiene, Construction Safety, Ergonomics, Electrical Safety, Equipment Safety, etc.) to treat the unique risks of their assigned areas.
  • Facilitate incident investigations using a Learning Teams approach, ensuring that preventative actions address system causes and not solely individual behaviors.
  • Investigates accidents and makes recommendations for safety and operating improvements.  Recommends improvements in policies, procedures, and equipment to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Assist with field work of pre-job/task planning and verification of controls/safeguards before starting work.
  • Develop new procedures, inspections, trainings, or reports as needed.
  • Coach, mentor and/or directly supervise other safety team members.
  • Compiles and submits required OSHA and company documentation.
  • Performs hazard assessments for manufacturing activities including, but not limited to, the need for personal protective equipment (PPE).  Approves all PPE and chemical purchases to ensure compliance with regulation.
  • Administers, implements, and provides oversight for the PSM program.
  • Plans and coordinates industrial hygiene testing (air sampling, noise level testing, etc.) to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Audit company facilities and aids developmental corrective actions and resolutions of identified issues in compliance with OSHA, DOT, and EPA regulations.
  • Establishes and maintains effective work relationships within the department, the Corporation, and the community; and maintains the professional competence, knowledge, and skill necessary for the satisfactory performance of all assigned responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Manage Safety Committee across all shifts.
  • Investigates incidents, including environmental, physical and property damage.
  • Communicate regularly as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to stakeholders within the Plant.
  • Coach and mentor staff as appropriate to improve performance.
  • Build relationships with internal and external key stakeholders to understand their requirements and address requests/issues in a timely fashion.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years work experience as an environmental, health or safety professional, preferably in a manufacturing, warehousing, distribution/shipping, or similar industrial segment.
  • Understanding of Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) safe operation, unsafe equipment conditions, and proper corrective actions to eliminate unsafe conditions.
  • Experience leading safety and health program development, training and communicating with all levels of personnel, and influencing/managing change.
  • Advanced technical knowledge in health and safety disciplines including Hazard Communication, LOTO, Confined Space, Electrical Safety, Safe Work at Height, Powered Industrial Vehicles, Ergonomics, and Equipment Safety.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt in all types of environments (office, production floor, docks, off-site warehouses, etc.)
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Work, Power Point, Project, etc.).
  • Well organized with meticulous attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, ability to make independent decisions, self-motivated, and proactive in safety and health approach
