IBM DB2 Subsystem Systems Programmer

Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced IBM DB2 Subsystem Systems Programmer to join our IT infrastructure team. This role involves managing, maintaining, and optimizing DB2 and IMS database subsystems on IBM mainframe platforms. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in DB2 system software, SMP/E, database performance tuning, disaster recovery, and technical documentation. IBM Mainframe Systems Programmer Level III Certificate 2.5 is required


Key Responsibilities:

  1. System Software Maintenance:

    • Install, upgrade, and maintain system software for DB2/IMS databases and related subsystem products.
  2. SMP/E Management:

    • Perform SMP/E tasks to support and maintain required DB2/IMS products and ensure timely updates.
  3. Resource Availability Management:

    • Manage database subsystem resources to ensure availability and reliability.
  4. Recovery Procedures Execution:

    • Execute recovery procedures for database subsystem resources as needed.
  5. Subsystem Status Reporting:

    • Provide regular status updates and reports on the health of database subsystems upon request.
  6. Data Restoration:

    • Perform DB2 recoveries caused by hardware failures, focusing on DB2 system objects such as catalogs and directory tables.
  7. Disaster Recovery (DR) Support:

    • Deliver DR support for DB2 database software and system objects, maintaining technical procedures and documentation for disaster recovery scenarios.
  8. Utility Job Setup:

    • Configure utility jobs (e.g., image copies, reorganizations) for new DB2 system objects.
  9. Performance and Capacity Optimization:

    • Conduct DB2 subsystem performance tuning, capacity planning, and optimization of resources such as buffer pools, logging, EDM pools, and ZPARM settings.
  10. Reorganization Scheduling:

  • Schedule and support reorganization activities for non-application DB2 objects, including catalogs, directories, and third-party product databases.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience:

    • Proven experience in IBM DB2/IMS systems programming, including subsystem installation, upgrades, and maintenance.
    • Hands-on experience with SMP/E processes.
    • Expertise in database performance tuning, capacity planning, and recovery procedures.
  • Technical Skills:

    • Deep knowledge of DB2 on z/OS platforms.
    • Strong understanding of DB2 utilities, buffer pools, logging, EDM pools, and ZPARM settings.
    • Familiarity with disaster recovery practices and tools.
    • Proficiency in technical documentation and procedure development.
  • Soft Skills:

    • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    • Excellent communication skills for status reporting and cross-functional collaboration.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects in a dynamic environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in IBM DB2 or related database technologies.
  • Experience with third-party database products and tools.
  • Familiarity with IMS database subsystems.
