Specialty Freight Manager

Summary

The Specialty Freight Manager is responsible for enhancing and increasing a designated specialty freight area customer and shipper base by collaborating with the Sales Team, contacting existing, inactive, and potential customers, and monitoring specialty freight management systems to secure shipments. They will be responsible for evaluating and maintaining a shipper base in the data system on an ongoing basis and maintaining updated information on all available shipments. The Specialty Freight Manager will also provide excellent customer service by negotiating, quoting, pricing, planning, and coordinating the needs of assigned accounts. They will provide administrative support and oversight to help ATS Operating Companies maintain clearance and comply with the specialty freight company’s requirements. This person must understand the ATS value proposition and be able to articulate it to customers.

Education and Experience

  1. High School diploma required and 2+ years of experience in a B2B sales environment preferred.
  2. A 2 or 4-year degree is preferred but not required.
  3. Experience with HAZMAT and designated specialty freight transportation is a plus but not required.
  4. Must have a Security Clearance from the United States Government or the ability to obtain one within three months of being hired into this position is required.
  5. A firm understanding of marketing, sales, and customer service principles.
  6. Self-starter with a strong entrepreneurial spirit.
  7. Strong problem-solving and analytic skills (especially concerning pricing and data mining); able to identify and resolve problems promptly. 
  8. Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  9. Strong interpersonal skills; able to establish trust and rapport with all levels of staff.  Able to relate effectively to diverse cultures.
  10. Must be able to think creatively and provide creative contributions to projects.
  11. Must be able to demonstrate a proactive commitment to ATS corporate values and the success of all staff.
  12. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required.
  13. Excellent communication skills (written, listening and verbal).
  14. Willing and able to travel infrequently, including overnight travel.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Plans, coordinates, and communicates load information with internal and external customers.
  2. Provides information and negotiates terms and conditions of loads (i.e., rates, credit, special instructions).
  3. Maximizes revenue per week per truck (RWT) and cents per mile (CPM) for accounts.
  4. Manages and grows existing business, while identifying and closing new business utilizing various sales and marketing methods.
  5. Provides outstanding customer service while taking calls from customers to, book loads, answer questions, resolve problems, and enter data timely and accurately.
  6. Maintains reports, tracking information, safety, service failures, and audit requirements as necessary for accounts. 
  7. Ensures contract execution is consistent with contract specifications and directives.
  8. Develops systems and processes to effectively support and manage freight.
  9. Assists in qualifying and onboarding drivers for a designated specialty freight area and obtaining security clearance.
  10. Develop ongoing expertise within the Specialty Freight area and function as the in-house expert for this area.
  11. Assists and functions as backup facility Security Officer for ATS ensuring all drivers have current security clearance, updated training, and ensuring records are in order and updated.
  12. Stay current with Transportation Protective Services requirements through the attendance of seminars, reading, and networking.
  13. Participates in process improvement and best practice activities.

  15. Complete work responsibilities outside of normal business hours as needed and infrequent travel may be required. 
  16. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

This position performs work primarily in an office setting.

  1. Constantly in a stationary position and occasionally will move around.
  2. Constantly operates a keyboard and mouse and constantly utilizes a computer monitor(s).

Compensation & Benefits

  • Total cash compensation range of this position is $56,000 to $76,000 including a base salary range of $50,000 to $70,000 and first-year training incentive of $6,000. Base salary offered is determined by relevant experience, education, certifications, and geographic location as compared to others doing substantially similar work. In addition to the base salary, employees may be eligible for performance-based incentives, which can vary depending on individual and/or company performance.
