Qualifications:BA/BS Degree in Bachelor?s degree in Historic Preservation, Archaeology, Architectural History, or related field (Master?s preferred) with minimum additional experience of 3 year(s) in cultural resources management or historic preservation, including experience with Section 106. Working knowledge of NHPA, 36 CFR Part 800, and related federal preservation laws and policies. OR Previously completed training in Section 106 of the NHPA, Tribal Consultation - Ability to review and interpret technical documents and provide clear, practical recommendations. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively across disciplines. Demonstrated understanding of federal-tribal consultation requirements, tribal sovereignty, and the cultural sensitivities involved in working with Indian Tribes.

Duties:The Cultural Resources Compliance Associate provides recommendations to the Planning and Environmental Compliance Office at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks concerning the identification and protection of historic properties during implementation of deferred maintenance, disaster recovery, and fire preparedness projects and planning efforts and serves in an advisory capacity to support compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).
This position provides technical guidance, review, and coordination to ensure agency actions consider historic preservation requirements. While not directly responsible for leading consultations, the Associate plays a key background role in preparing documentation, reviewing determinations, and facilitating informed decision-making by project managers and leadership. The position also provides critical support and expertise in matters involving tribal consultation and coordination with Tribal Nations under both Section 106 and related authorities.
- Provide expert guidance to project teams on the Section 106 review process and its application under 36 CFR Part 800. Interpret and advise on regulatory requirements, internal procedures, and federal preservation policies. 10%
- Assist program and project managers in identifying potential historic preservation compliance needs early in the planning and design process. Recommend appropriate levels of effort for identification and evaluation of historic properties. 60%
- Support project managers and leadership in understanding tribal consultation requirements under Section 106 and related laws (e.g., Executive Order 13175, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act). 20%
- Help ensure internal consistency in documentation, determinations of effect, and compliance actions across projects. 5%
- Serve as an internal resource for questions about consulting party coordination, public involvement, and tribal engagement processes. 5%
Other:- Health and Safety Considerations: The Section 106 Compliance Coordinator primarily works in an office or remote setting with minimal physical risk; however, this position may occasionally conduct site visits or walkovers in developed or semi-developed areas, which can involve uneven terrain, inclement weather, or proximity to active construction zones. Health and safety considerations include wearing appropriate footwear, maintaining situational awareness, and following established safety protocols to mitigate risks such as slips, trips, or minor environmental hazards during short hikes or site inspections. The position must comply with all organizational safety policies and training requirements, especially when supporting site reviews or field assessments.

The individual must be able to stand, stoop, or bend for short periods during site inspections and safely navigate construction-adjacent areas or outdoor developed settings.
