Uptown Animal Hospital is a growing General Practice and Urgent Care Hybrid facility in the beautiful city of Gig Harbor. We are open seven days a week and are an AAHA accredited facility. Our team is a compassionate group of veterinary professionals that include Urgent Care and General Practice veterinarians, Licensed Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants, Kennel assistants and Customer Service representatives who work as a cohesive team, providing quality, compassionate care to the surrounding communities because they love what they do and have fun doing it. We are a full-service hospital providing in-house diagnostics, digital radiology (including dental), ultrasonography, an onsite pharmacy and a state-of-the-art surgical suite. Position Summary: The Veterinary Assistant supports and assists the Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians, ensuring the safety of pets and clients, and the continuity of quality veterinary care. They work to keep pets safe and comfortable during their visit.
What You'll Do:

- Provide professional, efficient, quality medical care and exceptional service to clients while maintaining maximum productivity
- Obtain patient medical history from the client and referring veterinarians as needed
- Perform initial evaluation of pet’s condition, collect information from client, observe pet’s behavior, and check vital statistics
- Complete preparatory procedures and assist the Veterinarian throughout the rest of the examination, diagnosis, procedures, and treatment phases
- Restrain pets during exams as needed
- Create and maintain patient medical records and documentation
- Obtain and prepare various samples including blood, urine, and fecal samples for diagnostic testing
- Perform laboratory tests on samples and update the patient’s medical chart
- Educate clients about pet health needs, nutrition, and preventative care
- Perform X-rays and ECG and provide results to the Veterinarian
- Perform drug dosage calculations and fill prescriptions under the direction of a veterinarian
- Administer injections, vaccines, medication and anesthesia with supervision and under the direction of a veterinarian
- Perform dental prophylaxis, venipunctures, catheterization, and other procedures under supervision of a veterinarian
- Prepare patient, medications, and equipment for surgery
- Assist the doctor in surgical and dental procedures, administer required pre-surgical medication and prepare pets for surgery, hand the doctor instruments and materials during surgical procedures, and monitor vital signs of pets during surgery and recovery
- Observe proper isolation protocols/standards
- Support a practice environment that promotes collaboration and teamwork and ensures the delivery of quality, compassionate, effective, and efficient health care to pets
- Comply with all practice policies, quality assurance guidelines, and minimum standards of care
- Perform duties of a VA as required or limited under the respective state’s Veterinary Practice Act (note that certain states place additional licensing requirements for certain job duties of a CVT/LVT)
Education/Experience
- Experience with Avimark Software prefered
- High School Diploma or GED required
- 5+ years' experience in a veterinary practice
- Emergency or Urgent Care experience is preferred
Professional Licenses/Certifications:
- Certificate of completion from a NAVTA-approved Veterinary Assistant program preferred
