Yard Worker/Forklift Operator

Summary

A yard worker is responsible to transfer, secure, and stage freight by operating the appropriate company equipment or vehicle so that loads will arrive at final destination in a safe, timely, and efficient manner. This position works outdoors all the time. 

 

Education and Experience

1. High School Diploma or Equivalent.
2. Experience with operating vehicle and heavy equipment in a transportation environment preferred.
3. A valid driver’s license is required.
4. Forklift certified or become certified within 90 days of employment.
5. Must be able to operate all yard related equipment.
6. Must be self- motivated, able to multi-task and work independently.
7. Must be a team player, amenable to a variety of work projects.
8. Good decision-making, problem-solving, attention to detail and customer service skills (internal/external).
9. Basic experience in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required.
10. Excellent communication skills (written, listening and verbal).
11. Willing and able to travel occasionally, including overnight travel.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Performs or assists in terminal maintenance by using motorized equipment and hand/power tools for the upkeep of the property.
   1. Organizes, cleans, and secures storage yard and work areas to be free of any hazards.
   2. Report any broken or missing equipment to supervisor.
2. Operates all terminal equipment and vehicles safely to limit risk and liability to the employee, visitors, and company.
3. Assists with the preparing of all loads for shipping by following all DOT, OSHA, and company safety guidelines to protect the load, public, equipment, and property at all times.
   1. Looks up shipping instructions in computer system.
   2. Assists with loading/unloading and securement of loads as needed.
   3. Conducts required safety inspection checks daily.
   4. Assists during the trailer stacking, unstacking, and securing.
4. Functions consistently, effectively and reliably perform in accordance with the Company’s values as set forth in our core competencies and behaviors (All Employee Competencies).
5. Complete work responsibilities outside of normal business hours, and infrequent travel may be required. 
6. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

1. Frequently operate various forklifts and move product i.e., tractors.
2. Occasionally uses hand tools and power hand tools to perform light maintenance or cleaning.
3. Frequently inspects and assess equipment and loads to ensure safe transportation.
   1. Frequently climbs up/down forklifts, tractors, and ladders to perform duties.
   2. Frequently positioning self under, on top of, or in awkward positions to secure loads or fix things.
   3. Must be able to lift/move parts, tools, equipment:

• From 1 to 10 lbs. Frequently
• From 11 to 25 lbs. Frequently
• From 25 to 50 lbs. Occasionally
• Over 50 lbs. Occasionally
• Exposure to:
• Loud noises constantly requiring hearing protection.
• Temperature extremes frequently due to outside weather conditions.
• Dirt, dust, grease and odors constantly.
• Situations requiring eye protection and steel toed boots.

Compensation & Benefits:

• The anticipated hourly pay range for this position is between $20.00 - $25.00. Hourly pay rate offered is determined by relevant experience, education, certifications, and geographic location as compared to others doing substantially similar work.
