Individualized Study Tutor - ENVS 201, 300, 350 (TEMP)

Athabasca University's Learning Services Tutorial Department is seeking a Temporary Individualized Study Tutor for the following courses ending January 2026:

Environmental Studies 201: Developing an Environmental Studies Learning Pathway

Environmental Studies 350: Revising Your Environmental Studies Learning Pathway

Environmental Studies 300: Community Service Learning in the Environmental Sector

We are hiring one tutor for these three courses as they are all new courses only open to Bachelor of Environmental Studies program students, an undergraduate degree program that we hope will open January 1, 2026. ENVS 201 and 350 are very similar, we anticipate the student enrolment in ENVS 350 or ENVS 300 will be small for the term of this appointment, and the student enrolment in ENVS 201 will be moderate at best.

Qualifications and Experience Required:  A doctoral degree with an interdisciplinary background in disciplines such as (but not exclusive to) environmental studies, global studies, environmental education, environmental history, eco-criticism, eco-tourism, natural resource management, environmental politics, and/or environmental sociology.  Qualified candidates must demonstrate a critical social science perspective emphasizing empowerment, emancipation, anti-oppression, decolonization, inclusion, intersectionality and justice, as well as an interdisciplinary, integrative orientation to topics associated with socio-ecological sustainability, regeneration and transition.

Along with the relevant disciplinary credentials as mentioned above, the position requires someone with a broad understanding of the field of environmental studies and the many career paths it offers. Experience working individually with students to support them in their learning is required for this position, as well as experience working collaboratively in academic or other work environments where skills in teamwork, cooperation, and clear communication are necessary. They must also have knowledge of, or experience with community service learning. The tutor for these courses will undertake minimal marking and instead use most of their paid tutor time providing formative ungraded feedback as a means of empowering students to develop a program plan or a service learning experience that helps them fulfill their goals and passions and aligns with the BES Program regulations.

Teaching experience at a post-secondary level is required.  Experience in distance learning and familiarity with digital teaching technologies and online course delivery is preferred.  Experience with adult education, alternative assessment, supporting students in choosing courses and online course delivery are all considered assets.

This position requires excellent communication, organizational, administration and online/computer skills.  The successful candidate should have demonstrated ability to maintain a high academic standard, maintain accurate student records, and return students' communications and work promptly within the University's required service standards. Candidates must own or have access to a computer and internet with the capability to communicate with the University and students and the capability to run any applications required to perform tutorial support.  Please see http://itss.athabascau.ca/docs/virtualdesktop.htm for more information on computer and internet connection requirements.
