NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). These experienced professionals provide administrative, scientific, technical, and operational support to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service through the Experienced Services Program (ESP).

Positions listed here do not guarantee employment for any definite period. Enrollment in the Experienced Worker Programs administered by NEW Solutions is temporary. The enrollment relationship between NEW Solutions and the Enrollee is an ?at-will? relationship. This means that an Enrollee is free to terminate enrollment at any time during the enrollment period, and NEW Solutions and the Agency have the right to terminate the relationship with the Enrollee.

PLEASE NOTE: An ?Enrollee? is not a federal employee, nor an employee of NEW Solutions. An ?Enrollee? is a participant in a grant program established through a Cooperative Agreement funded by the agency and administered by NEW Solutions.

Qualifications:

MA/MS Degree in Wildlife Biology with minimum additional experience of 10 year(s) in working with large ungulates including use of appropriate biosafety and biosecurity protocols to prevent disease transmission and protect human, livestock and wildlife health OR Previously completed training in low-stress handling techniques

  • Instructing field personnel in wildlife disease sampling, biosafety & biosafety protocols, and low-stress handling.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, MS PowerPoint
  • Service and PMX population analysis software
Duties:

The enrollee will provide assistance and subject matter expertise regarding bison health and conservation best practices. This includes providing knowledge and experience in the field, wet lab, and the office on bison genetics, parentage and mean kinship, disease sampling and laboratory diagnostics, biosafety and biosecurity, as well as low-stress handling.

  • Assist Refuge staff with health topics at each of the National Wildlife Refuges on which bison range   40%
  • Assist attending Refuge staff, veterinarians, and volunteers before and during bison captures   30%
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the National Park Service and U.S. Geological Survey to collect, test, and analyze genetics samples to guide bison management strategies   30%

Other:
  • Required Certifications: Capture and anesthesia protocols for ungulates
  • Travel Requirements: Travel to bison captures in a GOV
  • Overnight travel: Approximately 6-8 weeks/year (OCT NOV Very Busy)
  • Air travel anticipated: 2 or 3 times a year
  • Government Vehicle Training: DOI Defensive Driving course
  • Required Safety Gear: Personal protective equipment for biosafety and biosecurity, including mask, gloves, goggles, apron, boots
  • Safety Gear Use: when working in the field
  • Physical requirements: Ability to stand on hard surfaces, work outside in a variety of environmental conditions, kneel, squat, lift 40 lbs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
