NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). These experienced professionals provide administrative, technical, and professional support to the U.S. Geological Survey U.S. Geological Survey through the Experienced Services Program (ESP).

Qualifications:

MA/MS Degree in Geology/Hydrology with minimum additional experience of 30 year(s) in Geology/Hydrology OR Previously completed training in Indirect Measurements-Hawaii

Duties:

The position involves serving as a technical specialist for surface and groundwater programs, focusing on the review, audit, and quality assurance of hydrologic records and time-series data to ensure accurate information that supports water resource management and public safety. The hydrologist will provide expert guidance on indirect flow measurement techniques while mentoring junior staff to maintain program continuity and build institutional capacity.

  • Quality Assurance Review: Conduct comprehensive quality assurance reviews of surface water time-series data following established USGS techniques and methods, performing both Approve and Audit functions within the three-step USGS quality assurance framework to ensure data accuracy reliability and consistency across all monitoring records while identifying and resolving data anomalies, gaps, inconsistencies hydrologic datasets   50%
  • Discharge Computation: Compute discharge ratings and peak flows using indirect methods including slope-area, contracted-opening, flow-over-dam, flow-through-culverts, and critical-depth techniques.   25%
  • Technical Mentorship: Develop junior staff through hands-on guidance and structed knowledge transfer activities focused on hydrologic analysis methods and quality assurance procedures, help build individual competencies, and strengthen overall program capacity to ensure long--term institutional expertise and professional growth within the water monitoring team.   25%
